McKayla is a beautiful girl with a beautiful story. The day Joel and I shot photos for McKayla’s family at Pelham Mill this image grabbed me. I remember trying to pose seven people of greatly varying heights along an old wooden fence overlooking the Enoree River. McKayla wasn’t pay attention to anything but the river at this particular moment. The sun caught her just right and I was in the right place at the right time. I think that’s a big part of being the kind of photographer I aim to be…..watching for those candid moments when no one else is looking, when the subject is caught up.
When I bought some canvases and art supplies to try my hand at mixed media, I knew right off that this was one of the images I wanted to use. I will admit I was pleasantly surprised that what I saw in my head before I jumped into this endeavor was nearly the same thing you see on this canvas. Texture. That’s what I was after. Taking the moment and bringing out the texture and dimension from within. I look forward to creating more mixed media canvases with photographs Joel and I have taken.
